Barton's Lagoon
A large wetland aproximately 600 metres walk from the entrance to Lake Domain. Great for a short walk.
Wairarapa Lake Shore Scenic Reserve
A small grassed area where the lake meets the forest. There is a picnic shelter and toilet here.
Wairio Wetlands
The site of an impressive community wetland restoration project. This is a great spot for bird watching.
Lake Domain
Lake Domain provides sweeping views across Lake Wairarapa. It’s a starting point to walks around Barton’s Lagoon and to Tauherenikau Delta.
You’ll see a range of birds here.
There is good vehicle access, camping, a picnic shelter and toilet.
Boggy Pond
Take a 30-40 minute loop walk around Boggy Pond. There's a bird hide along the way.
Lake Ferry
A small settlement on the shores of Lake Ōnoke. Stop at the hotel for excellent fish and chips. There is a public toilet here, one of only 3 around Wairarapa Moana.
Ōkorewa Lagoon
The site of an old fishing village, now home to a community planting project.
Lake Ōnoke
A Coastal Lake which is blocked off from the sea for much of the year by Ōnoke Spit.
Ruamāhanga River
The Ruamāhanga River weaves through all 5 Wairarapa towns before entering Wairarapa Moana at Lake Ōnoke.
Ōnoke Spit
A wild 4km stretch of sand, famous for its windy weather.
Kiriwai Lagoon
A small dune wetland, home to a range of birds.
Otauira Reserve
A small reserve with a walkway which connects it to Dorset Square.
Waiorongomai
Lovely picnic spot amongst the trees.
Pounui Lagoon
Lovely spot for a walk and excellent bird watching.
Te Pouaruhe
The site of a restoration project aiming to connect 18 hectares of wet pasture back with Lake Ōnoke.
