Where you can find them:
In estuaries, wetlands, lakes and rivers. Pied stilt like shallow, sandy or muddy water where their long legs come in handy. You can see them on the margins of Lake Wairarapa, Lake Ōnoke and adjacent lagoons.
What they look like:
A dainty bird with long pink legs, an elegant black and white body and a long, thin, black bill.
