Where you can find them:
In open rivers in the North and South Islands. This is a secretive species that spends the majority of its time amongst the swift rapids of stony rivers and streams.
What they look like:
Small and sleek, they have dark stripes along their sides. Their coloration is either a light to dark grey or light to dark brown pattern depending on the colours in their stream, as they blend into their surroundings.
Did you know:
We don’t know much about how they reproduce. Males usually live further inland and females closer to the coast, but scientists haven’t ever seen them get together to spawn.
